Moving the World Forward When You Don't Hold the Reins
Experience dictates that 50% of all items on the "To Do" list of champions of workplace health should be directed at securing and maintaining durable sponsorship for their proposals. Identifying the critical ladder of sponsors for workplace health initiatives, articulating their desired contribution, accounting for formal and informal power, and selling the initiative to sponsors in a way that matches how they like to buy are all strategies champions of change must master to effectively engage decision-makers. This session will review time-tested, traction level tactics that will make champions of workplace health powerful leaders of organizational effectiveness. Power. It ultimately comes down to power. Although the "truth" of workplace health may be self-evident to those of us who "believe", the fact of the matter is that it is not the raison d'etre for the existence of most organizations. Consequently, when we choose to champion workplace health initiatives, we must plan for some level of resistance. That plan is, at its core, a strategy for managing power. This workshop provides a time-tested "To Do" list for champions of workplace health. It describes how those of us who do not have the formal authority to dedicate sufficient resources to launching workplace health initiatives can lead up, earn followers among other agents of change, and build solid business cases for the program. It prescribes practical steps for using a strategic awareness to become effective at the traction level while building a web of sponsors and a mass of champions to melt what is traditionally the greatest block to organizational change - the frozen middle. In its essence, then, this workshop is about the growth and application of positive power to successfully launch workplace health programs.
