Leadership From the Inside-Out

Two Days

quoteThe song "Amazing Grace" tells the story of a man who was lost but then found his way. He uses his personal "compass" to light his path. Explorers have long used the compass to guide and point them in the right direction. And just like magnetic north each person also has a True North.

This workshop will challenge your beliefs about leadership. It examines the topic from the inside out, with you at the center.

Recent history points us to people who affected the course of human events. They were not formal leaders yet they attracted followers. They became leaders because they acted on injustice based upon their internal compass: people like Ghandi, Rosa Parks, Lech Walesa, and Nelson Mandela just to name a few.

Examining the common characteristics that propelled each of them to leadership produces wise teachings:

  • They didn't seek to be leaders
  • Their leadership was defined by their followers
  • A strong internal compass guided their actions
  • They endured hardship for their beliefs
  • They followed others

This workshop will challenge you to examine your virtues, and to clearly articulate your internal compass. Consider these questions.

  • Why do I want to lead others?
  • In what area of my life will leadership emerge?
  • Am I clear about my personal values?
  • If my friends and family were asked, could they list my top values in life?
  • Who am I? What is my purpose in life?
  • What would I do if I knew I could not fail?

Through introspection, small-group discussion, and simulations, you will wrestle with the answers to these questions and mor -- questions you must answer if you want to earn followers.

Why? Because "followership" is a voluntary act; people will follow only if there is a strong sense of identity and purpose to the leader. The fact that you are the manager or supervisor doesn't mean you are a leader. If you turn around and look, and no one is following, then you aren't leading!

Great leaders must first examine their own path and purpose before they can light the path for others. The source of your strength and character forms your internal compass. The path to effective leadership then, is an inside-out process. The private victory precedes the public victory. You must first lead yourself well before you can lead others.
